Validation Therapy

What is Validation?

This communication technique enables caregivers to establish deeper connections with our Memory Care residents by meeting them where they are in their personal journey. For instance, if a resident perceives themselves as a 35-year-old professional, the caregiver engages with them within that reality. This approach involves accepting the resident's values and beliefs without contradiction. Attempting to reorient a resident with "facts" can often lead to confusion and lack of success. Instead, caregivers empathize with the resident's perspective, validating their emotions and feelings rather than simply redirecting their attention.

How does it work?

A resident declines to go to dinner, explaining that she is waiting for her husband to join her. The caregiver is aware that the husband has passed away. Informing the resident of her husband's passing could potentially lead to confusion and distress, as she may interpret it as if her spouse has just passed away. This may cause the resident to experience renewed grief over her loss.

A better approach using Validation might be:

Resident: I’m not ready to leave. I'm waiting for Charlie to arrive.

Caregiver: Charlie won’t be able to join us for dinner tonight, but I’d be delighted if you joined me. I'd love to hear more about Charlie—he sounds like a remarkable person.

Resident: He truly was a wonderful husband! What's on the menu for dinner?
